Tips on How to Layer Your Jewels

Layering Guide

We layer jewels to make an ordinary outfit extraordinary and to give some punch and personality to our
“look.” Working in the fashion and jewelry industry, I have picked up a lot of tips and tricks from the trade. Here are eight layering tips that I use to mix and match my jewels.

Necklaces:
1. LAYERING LENGTHS
I layer different lengths and textures to add interest to the outfit. When wearing a simple shirt, I love long layers that fill the neckline.
2. THE PENDANT POP
Adding a pendant can break up the chains and give your look a focus point. I love silver and gold discs and large circular pendants with color.
3. MEDDLING WITH METAL
For a more cohesive look, I usually stick to grouping the same metals with necklaces. Pairing silver with silver and yellow gold with yellow gold works when you have different textures and lengths. Sometimes I will throw in a two toned chain for a more edgy look.
Bracelets:
4. THE RULE OF NUMBERS
Big bold bangles look great in stacks of twos, while thinner bangles are generally worn in odd numbers.
5. MIX IT UP
Chains, beads, cords, leather….I mix all metals and materials with my bracelets. I like a funky stack with a punch.
6. WATCH OUT
Compliment your watch with textured pieces that add color and interest.
7. SANDWICH THE STACK
For a more polished pile, start with a center bangle  and work out sandwiching the bracelet with the same bangles on both sides.
8. SCATTER THE STONES
Pick a stone to accent your stack. Let the bangles lay where they fall

Detemine your Ring Size

Determine Ring Size With a Ring Size Chart

Use a ring that fits you to determine your ring size. Place your ring over the nearest size circle. The inner edge of the ring should align with the outer edge of the circle. If your ring appears to fit between two sizes, buy the larger size.Ring Size Chart

Measure Ring Size With a Finger Size Strip

To create your own ring sizer, print and cut the strip below. Insert the narrow end of the sizer through the "cut here" slot. With numbers on the outside, place the loop around your finger, and pull until the fit is snug but comfortable.

Know When to Resize a Ring

It is common for people to get their rings resized. For some, it’s weight gain or weight loss, or it could be the desire to wear the ring on a different finger. Resizing is common and can almost always be done, although there are a few exceptions. Decreasing the band size is a simple process for an experienced jeweler. The jeweler cuts out a small portion of the band and reshapes the ring back to its circular shape. The ring is then welded to ensure that the resizing of the ring is not visible. To increase ring size, the ring needs to be cut and an additional piece of the band soldered in. Extreme adjustments of two or more sizes may result in a noticeable change in the look or structure of the ring. Discuss ring sizing with a jeweler to ensure there will be no visible flaws.

Things to Consider When Measuring Ring Size

A ring is an important investment and it is best to do proper research to determine what size is needed. Several factors should be considered when measuring for ring size.
  • Fingers tend to swell during summer months and deflate during the winter. Adjust the measurement accordingly.
  • Measure ring size three to four times to ensure no mistakes have been made.
  • Fingers swell during pregnancy or when taking steroid-based medications. Make adjustments accordingly.
  • Measure ring size at the end of the day and when fingers are warm. Fingers are smaller in the morning and when they are cold.
  • Jewelry stores usually only charge once for a resizing. A reputable store should not charge multiple times.
Ring shoppers should take their time when purchasing a ring to ensure they get the most comfortable and accurate fit. Keep in mind that the size of fingers can fluctuate, depending on the weather and the season.

How To Test For Gold Without a Gold Tester Or X-Ray Machine

It is very hard for an average person to know whether a piece of jewelry is made of gold or not, especially because most homes across the world do not have gold testers or x-ray machines.
The good news is that there are several different things home owners/business owners can do without purchasing expensive equipment to ensure that what they have purchased or already own is in fact gold or not.
The easiest test around is the magnet test.  If you have a magnet (earth magnets are the best) you can hover right over or even put the magnet right on the piece.  If an item is made of gold it should not pull towards the magnet or lift up off the table it is on.  You will want to be careful that there is nothing around the article that is getting tested that could attract to the magnet, a big mistake is when people use a folding table and there is a metal bar right under where you are testing.  Now this test is not full proof but if you have a piece that says 14k on it and you test it with a magnet and it does not pull than most likely that piece is marked correctly and you have GOLD.  Sometimes something pulls that is made of gold...hoop earrings are one of these. Often hoop earrings have a small metal wire inside that is not gold and does attract towards the magnet. In this case your gold hoop would stick to the magnet, not because of the gold content but because of the wire inside this.  If you think this is the case and you don't care about the piece anymore, you can take out the wire and test again.  Now there are times that an item does not stick to the magnet and has no markings on it but it is not gold. This happens when something is so heavily plated that the metal underneath is not picked up.  This does happen so the next step if you are still wondering is the acid test.
The acid test focuses around the fact that gold is a metal which is resistant to change by corrosion, oxidation, or acid.  With the acid test you rub the item on  a black stone. This will leave an easily visable mark. If you want to keep the item, do this on the back side because it will damage the piece a bit. The mark is tested by applying nitric acid.  If your item is not gold the mark will dissolve. If the item does not dissolve you can do one more test with it.  Test the remaining mark with nitric acid and hydrochloric acid (aqua regia). If the mark is removed and dissolved, the item is genuine gold.
Another very simple test is to drop your piece of jewelry into a large container filled with water. Gold is heavy and should sink. If you item sinks that is a good sign it could be real gold. If the piece floats it is probably fake.
Most jewelry is stamped with a hallmark in which it tell the karat weight (14k, 22k etc.) However, if it doesn't have a mark, it doesn't always mean it isn't gold.  Jewelry made before 1900 may not have any gold markings. The same goes for jewelry that was made by an independent jewelry designer or artist. It could also be that the mark was worn away or even cut or smoothed over as is the case sometimes when rings are re-sized.
These tests are not all full proof but should give you a good idea with what you are dealing with. If you want to know for sure, you can always go to a jeweler and they can use an x-ray machine or gold tester to tell you what your piece is made up of.
Good luck!

Gold Jewelry Fashion Trends for the New Year and Beyond

Each year, on fashion runways from New York to Paris, Milan, and Toyko, gold is "new again" as designers interpret it in new and exciting ways. What makes gold a fashion perennial? The answer is clear: when it comes to beauty, versatility, durability, and affordability, gold jewelry is unsurpassed. In the hands of talented artists and designers, gold is constantly "reinvented" to suit the evolving tastes of the women who wear it. But whether as a ring, a necklace, or bracelet, standing alone or presented in combination with gemstones and other precious metals…gold is always in fashion. Here's a look at what's "hot" this year:
Topping the list of this year's "What's Hot" in gold wedding anniversary gifts, women say they want charm bracelets, hoop earrings, and hair ornaments. For wives who would like to present their husbands with gold tokens, the "top of the charts" picks are cufflinks, tie clips, money clips, neck chains, and I.D. bracelets.
But #1 for him AND her - a classic gold Navur ring.

Ring Design and Style

The diamond engagement ring carries tremendous meaning, and its form is iconic. As a result, the engagement ring isn’t as strongly affected by fashion as other types of jewelry. However, there’s still room for distinctiveness and individuality. The basic form has also evolved over the years, and new styles have been added from time to time.
Some experts also say that engagement rings are growing more varied because of brides’ increasing influence in purchase decisions. Most engagement rings sold today can be divided into five design categories – diamond solitaires, solitaires with accents, threediamond rings, diamond cluster rings, and diamond bands.
The classic diamond solitaire ring is a single diamond with a prong setting in a simple band of precious metal. This remains the most popular version of the design. Modern variations may have different setting styles – bezel or tension, for example – but most don’t stray far from the original concept.
Essentially a solitaire embellished with smaller diamonds, this is now the favorite engagement design with most age groups. More than 1/2 of brides currently receive a diamond solitaire with accents. There are countless variations. In many, the center diamond is flanked by smaller diamonds of the same or complimentary shape. Other styles feature clusters or short rows of melee on either side of the center. Small diamond or colored gemstone melee may also be set partway or completely around the ring’s shank.
Originally created for anniversaries, three-diamond jewelry made its debut in 2000. The concept is defined by three diamonds of significant size representing the past, present, and future of a relationship. The concept has been applied to other jewelry forms, but the symbolism of the three-diamond ring appeals to many younger brides. As a result, about 1 in 10 diamond engagement rings fall in this category.

Gift of Love

By strict traditional definition, bridal jewelry consists of engagement and wedding rings only. In most stores today, however, the bridal section also holds anniversary rings, and perhaps gifts for the bride. It’s where the inventory of unset diamonds is kept as well.
Rings have been given as tokens of love and commitment for thousands of years. At different times, they’ve been made of various metals as well as less durable materials like leather, wood, and even plant fiber. History first records a diamond engagement ring in the 1400s. For centuries after that, diamond engagement rings belonged mainly to royal courtship. They began appearing in the US in the late 1800s, and became a mainstream.
 American tradition by the 1950s.
Today about 84% of US brides receive a diamond engagement ring. By some estimates, diamond engagement rings account for more than 1/2 the total value of the entire bridal jewelry market. When customers choose diamond engagement rings, the most important features are usually the ring’s design and style, the center diamond’s shape and carat weight, the metal the ring is made from, and the ring’s price.

Wedding Anniversary Traditions

Tradition tells us that each wedding anniversary should be celebrated by giving your
loved one a gift made from a different material. Paper symbolizes the first year of
marriage, but with each passing year, the gifts become more precious or more
rare. This progression is meant to symbolize the growth in a couple's relationship
through the years.
The origins of the traditional list are not known, however some of the traditions are
believed to date back to medieval times. Today, we accompany these traditions with
a more modern list that not only offers greater variety, but in many cases, puts a
higher value on earlier anniversaries. In addition, a list of jewelry and gemstone
traditions offers recommendations for those who prefer to adorn their loved one with
something truly precious each year.

Gold, Platinum & Silver Tips

Generally, the higher the carat weight of gold, the softer the metal. So that 9ct gold, being alloyed with other metals tends to be less resistant to scratching than say 22ct gold. This is why some recommend that you should wear rings of a similar quality together (e.g. wedding and engagement rings). Because gold is a soft metal and some manufacturers use this feature to "stretch" out the metal to produce a "showy" piece, but don't take into account the need for strength. The unsuspecting buyer thinks that they're buying a great piece of jewellery, only to find it going out of shape on the first wear. All our gold jewellery is inspected by a professional jeweller, before dispatch, we only deal with manufacturers of the highest reputation. Sterling silver will polish up by rubbing or buffing it with a soft cotton cloth or a Sunshine Cloth. If you store silver in plastic bags with an interlocking seal, it will be less prone to tarnish. Gold, silver, and platinum score only 2 to 4 on the Moh's scale of hardness, sand is 7 on the Mohs scale, which means your precious metal is softer than sand and can be easily scratched.
Gemstone Tips
Gem stone hardness is based on a standard called the Mohs scale. The higher the Mohs scale number, the harder the stone is. When the Mohs scale was developed, early gemologists tried rubbing one stone against another to see which stone caused scratching on another. Quartz (the stone that makes up sand) is rated at 7 on the Mohs scale, and that is why any gemstone with a rating of less than 7 is easily scratched (such as coral, lapis lazuli, opal, pearl, and turquoise). Also, some stones can be quite porous (such as opal, pearl, turquoise), that is why you shouldn't leave these kind of stones immersed in water for too long.
Common stones that are damaged in sunlight, these include:
  • Amethyst: becomes paler
  • Ametrine: may change colour
  • Aquamarine: becomes paler
  • Aventurine: translucent types often lose colour
  • Beryl: brown or orange types may change to pale pink
  • Citrine: may change colour
  • Kunzite: becomes pale or loses colour
  • Rose Quartz: becomes paler
  • Smoky Quartz: becomes paler
Gemset Jewellery
Check your jewellery to ensure that stones mounted in rings are not loose or rattle - if that's the case, visit your local jeweller before it's too late - it's much cheaper to have the prongs repaired than to replace a gemstone. Don't forget that the prongs of a ring can and do wear down, If the prongs wear down too much or break, you've lost the stone. Prongs are easily "retipped" by most jewellers to keep the stone secure.
Beads
If you have beaded necklaces such as gemstone, or pearls, store them flat, preferably in a silk pouch. If the string breaks, let a professional jeweller restring them for you. If you are considering buying expensive beaded jewellery look for beads are a knotted between each bead, so that if the string breaks you won't loose so many beads! Don't store pearls in plastic bags, always store in the box or silk pouch that they should be supplied with.
Fashion Jewellery
Gold or Silver plated items can vary considerably in quality. To be called Gold Plated, jewellery only needs to be coated in gold up to 1 micron. Better made products are usually coated upto 3 microns. Because precious metals are only coated onto base metal, the care instructions given above are even more relevant. We would also personally advise you not to wear "fashion" jewellery on a day to day basis, but rather for "special occassions" - that way you'll enjoy them for much longer!

Jewellery Care Tips

Here are a few simple tips to keep your jewellery looking it's best for much longer....
Firstly, always buy the best quality that you can afford - some jewellery may seem to be a bargain, but on inspection may be poorly made. We are proud to state that our jewellery is selected by a professional jeweller, ensuring the quality of the products supplied to your our valued client.
Protection
Always protect your jewellery from sharp blows, scratching, chemicals, sunlight and heat/cold. Ideally, store your jewellery in a soft lined box or pouch. Try to keep pieces apart, so that they don't rub together or tangle up.
  • Wear jewellery for appropriate tasks, avoid wearing rings when cleaning, gardening or performing sports activities.
  • Don't let your jewellery come into contact with nail polish removers, perfume and hairspray
  • Clean your jewellery regularly, use a professional jewellery cleaning product (always read the manufacturers instructions)
  • When washing your hands (away from home) - don't place your rings on the wash basin - remove them and place them onto your necklace or place in a pouch in your handbag/purse
  • Never go swimming in your jewellery, chlorine in swimming pools can cause damage
Parure
A collection containing three or more pieces of jewelry designed to be worn together. Historically, a parure included such items as tiaras, belt clasps, and shoe buckles.
Paste
Imitation diamonds or gemstones created from glass that has a high lead content. Paste diamonds had high popularity from the 1750s to 1850s. Often found in antique jewelry.
Pavé
A placement of many small gems to cover, or pave, the surface of a ring.
Precious Gems
A misleading term rarely used in modern jewelry. The term indicates gems rarer and harder than semi-precious gems; precious gems undergo very little treatment before being used in jewelry. The most common are diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire. Although soft, opals and pearls make the precious gems list because of rarity.
Precious Metal
Rarity and value decide a metal’s classification as a precious metal. The precious metals used to make jewelry are gold, silver, platinum, palladium, and titanium. These metals are prized for high luster, little reactivity, and ease of workability.
Rose Gold

Gold with a rosy blush that comes from a gold and copper alloy.
Hardness
Hardness refers to the amount of resistance a gem has to scratching and abrading. Gems receive a hardness rating between one, the softest, and 10, the hardest.
Imitation
Gems that have only a visual similarity to natural gemstones. Imitation gems are entirely manmade. Also called Simulated.
Inclusion
Flaws inside of a gem.
Karat
Karat, or K, refers to the percentage of gold in jewelry. Items labeled 18K, 14K, or 10K contain gold mixed with another metal, and items falling below 10K cannot be called gold. 24K indicates 100 percent gold; also referred to as solid gold. 18K indicates 75 percent gold. 14K indicates 58.3 percent gold. 10K indicates 41.7 percent gold.
Lab-Grown or Lab-Created
Gems grown in a lab that have chemical and optical properties essentially the same as, but not identical to, natural gems.
Loupe
A small, hand-held magnifying glass that is held up to the eye and provides 10-times magnification.
Luster
A bright shine showing on the surface of gems or metal.
MOHS Rating
The number between one and 10 assigned to a gem according to its scratch resistance. See Hardness.
Mother-of-Pearl
A hard, pearly lining from certain mollusks’ shells. Two common mollusks with this smooth lining are pearl oysters and abalone.
Natural
Gems mined from the earth; also called Genuine.
Nickel Silver or German Silver

An alloy combining copper, nickel, and zinc that does not contain actual silver.

Genuine, Gold-Filled, Gold-Plated, Gold Vermeil

Genuine
Gems mined from the earth; also called Natural.
Gold-Filled
Gold is bonded to a base alloy and rolled, so the base alloy becomes a filling surrounded by gold. Gold must comprise at least 5 percent of the total weight, and the entire exposed surface must be gold.
Gold-Plated
The coating of a base metal with gold. For example, the karat amount is displayed as 14K gold-plated. The thin layer of gold makes the jewelry less expensive, but the plating does wear and chip away over time.
Gold Vermeil

A thin layer of gold, of various qualities, covering sterling silver. Gold vermeil jewelry should display a karat amount.
